MEDICAL BILLING & CODING

Training leading to certification in Medical Billing & Coding can be gained through several educational programs.

Students enrolled in Certified Medical Assisting programs as well as in Medical Office Administration are required to complete classes in medical coding and can choose to undergo examination to become a certified coder. (See Educational programs listed under these careers for enrollment possibilities.)

Many four-year college programs in medical administration or other medical technology area also include billing and coding classes. A few four-year colleges offer college degrees in this area, for example Temple University, University of Pittsburgh, and Claremont College. Expansion of these four-year college degrees is expected as the United States will in 2013 adopt a system of billing and coding now maintained by the World Health Organization and used by 25 other countries. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (known as “ICD-10”) is a medical classification for the coding of diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of injury or diseases, as maintained by the World Health Organization (WHO). The code set allows more than 14,400 different codes and permits the tracking of many new diagnoses. Using optional sub-classifications, the codes can be expanded to over 16,000 codes. Using codes that are meant to be reported in a separate data field, the level of detail that is reported by ICD can be further increased, using a simplified multi-axial approach. Adoption of this expanded international system of billing and coding is requiring extensive retraining for medical centers and professionals who have expanded training are in high demand for highly paid positions.

Many community colleges offer one year Medical Coding Certification educational programs. These programs are usually offered at colleges that also offer Medical Office Administration and Certified Medical Assisting educational programs. Contact your nearby community colleges to determine what medical billing and coding educational programs are available in your area.
