OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (OT) BACCALAUREATE AND MASTER’S DEGREE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

As of 2007, new standards applied for students graduating from occupational therapy programs. No longer was completion of a baccalaureate degree program sufficient. Instead, students must complete a master's level program to qualify for the national examination that determines certification. The master's degree program requires two full years of study and is geared toward the student who has a bachelor's degree in an alternative area of study. Some schools offer accelerated master's degree programs for students enrolled in health services management.

A four-year doctorate program is also available for occupational therapy students who already have their master's degrees. Like all health careers, the more education obtained, the more advanced and higher paying jobs are available.

Some community colleges are affiliated with other colleges that are accredited to offer occupational therapy assistant programs. Check with your local community colleges to determine whether they offer this program in collaboration with another institution. You may want to determine how many classes you will be able to complete locally and what courses you will need to take at the accredited school.
